Vote With It: The Movement has sent out several post and many tweets letting people know of SignOn petitions that are in line with the Vote With It ideals. It seems appropriate that we should spend the time to talk about this service. SingOn.org is a service provided by MoveOn.org. It allows anyone to set up an online petition. Users can then communicate with people who have signed their petition. However, with this open forum MoveOn.org does not endorse the content put on these petitions.  They are only providing the ability for others to become more active in their community and make a difference.

MoveOn was created as a way to give every American a voice in politics and not just those with lots of money or a team of lobbyists. They are composed of different pieces, each with a different focus in order to achieve this goal. Civic Action is a 501(c) nonprofit organization and deals with education and advocacy. The Political Action branch is a federal PAC and actively participates in Congress’s lawmaking and the election of politicians. Both of these areas are funded by small contributions from individuals. They do not accept money from corporations or large donations from CEOs. They wish to remain an organization dedicated to giving voice to the people not businesses.

SignOn was created as a way to help people on the individual level make a difference on issues they are passionate about. It gives you the tools to start a petition and run a campaign. While giving you the resources to mount a campaign, making it successful is up to you. If your petition has a fast growing number of people signing it, they might feature it on their homepage. If your petition is in line with the beliefs of MoveOn they will occasionally promote petitions by sending e-mail alerts to members in the local area.

SignOn will not remove petitions they don’t agree with. If a petition is found to violate the terms of use they will. These are standard agreements that are common sense. You cannot have a petition that expresses hate based on race, ethnicity, gender or sexuality. It can’t be used for commercial content or contain any kind of Obscenities. You also can’t claim to have the support of MoveOn.org. Just because you are using their site does not mean they support your movement. What they are supporting is your ability to create a movement.  While they scan their site for violations, they also encourage the community to flag petitions that may be in violation.

Although you should deliver your petition in person for the most effect, SignOn will deliver constituent signatures by email to the President, governors, Congress, and state legislators if auto-delivery is set to “on.” They also deliver signatures to targets you enter manually if a valid email address is provided. These targets can be CEOs, local officials, or those who your petition is attempting to motivate.

SignOn does their communication through e-mails. When people sign a petition you can receive e-mails from the petition creator. These e-mails are sent through an online system and your address is kept private. It will not be shown to the person who created the petition.  This adds a much needed level of security for people who believe in a cause but are wary of giving out their information. MoveOn and SignOn sponsors will also send updates to the e-mail address provided but you can unsubscribe from any of these lists whenever you want. Your e-mails will never be sold or shared with outside parties.

If there is a cause you are passionate about you might want to check out SignOn.org and see how you can help inspire change. Don’t be afraid to support others.

Mega Million Lotto

by Domenick on March 30, 2012

The Mega Million Lotto has reached record levels. After the previous drawing, in which nobody won, it was at $500 million. On the Friday of the drawing it was up to $640 million. It was estimated that 1 million lotto tickets were being sold every hour.

The odds of winning are 175,711,356 to 1. People are always throwing out statistics like you have a better chance of being hit by lightning or hitting a hole-in-one while playing golf. My favorite was from a CNN report saying Han Solo had better chances at 1 in 3,720 for successfully navigating an asteroid field.

The news likes to talk about what you could buy with over half a billion dollars. Then they throw in some cool visuals of all these expensive cars parked together or homes crowding a neighborhood.

Yesterday, I was joking around about how the government is going to love taxing whoever wins the Jackpot. It could really help them with the debt. Then I started thinking about all the good that money could do. I am not referring to what I tell God I would give to charity if I won. I am talking about the million dollars being spent every hour. Imagine if consumers put that power to use. What if that dollar was given at the store register when asked to donate to a charity? That dollar will be guaranteed to help someone have a better life. What if you spent a dollar more on a product that does not contain harmful chemicals? Odds are companies will take notice.  What if you spent a dollar more on natural foods, rather than the heavily processed meals? You would increase your chances of living a healthier life. What if you didn’t give that dollar to the oil company and took your bike or walked? You wouldn’t need luck to get healthier and save money.

People line up outside stores to pick their winning lotto numbers. They check the lotto results to see if they have won more money than they would ever need. Imagine if we could find a way to motivate people to spend a dollar on things that are guaranteed to pay off and help make the world a little better for everybody instead of one lucky individual.

Imagine what a buck could do.

Animal Intelligence

March 17, 2012

Science is constantly trying to answer the question, “How intelligent are animals?” This question is difficult to solve because intelligence itself is something without a clear answer. Even human intelligence is constantly in debate. What does an IQ exam really test? What type of intelligence is being measured? How important is one aspect to the [...]

February 18, 2012

I was having a difficult time deciding what to write for this week’s blog. I wanted to do something on Foxconn but I did not feel there was anything new that I could bring to the table.  Then Apple’s response got me thinking beyond this one incident and company. This news cycle is all about [...]

The Omnivore’s Dilemma

February 11, 2012

I have been wanting to read Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals for a while.  It is one of those books that has been sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be picked up. The Omnivore’s Dilemma has received a lot of praise over the years and for good reason. This [...]

STOP Former Monsanto VP Appointment To FDA

February 7, 2012

President Obama has appointed former Monsanto VP and lobbyist Michael Taylor to become senior adviser to the FDA’s commissioner. This linkage between food safety and corporate interests that have little regard for the public health must be stopped. This example of a “fox watching the hen house” is inexcusable. President Obama must reverse this policy [...]

Donate Blood: Good Cause & Good For You

January 28, 2012

Last month my school organized a blood drive. The Red Cross came to our campus where students and faculty were encouraged to donate blood. I ride my bike a little less than 5 miles to work and was curious if I could donate blood and then ride at a leisurely pace home about two hours [...]

Colbert Super Pac / Corporations People?

January 20, 2012

The Colbert Report has an ongoing sketch called the Colbert Super Pac. It has been very entertaining and educational.  Stephen Colbert formed his own Super Pac and uses it to not only make his audience laugh but also highlight the absurd power business now have since the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people.  I [...]

Storage / Too Much Stuff / New Years Resolution

January 10, 2012

Back when the “Vote With It” website was being built I was using Facebook as a way to get information out into the world. These were not in-depth blog post but little snippets of facts to get people thinking about how their money could make a difference. One of the posts was about storage units.  [...]
